What is the client?
The client comes from the Latin word, clinare, which means ‘to lean’ and is defined as ‘one who is the recipient of a professional service’
A client is somebody who buys goods or pays for services. Companies and other organizations may also be clients. As opposed to customers, clients usually have an arrangement or a relationship with the seller.
Client, the term most often used as a synonym for a patient who receives health care in an ambulatory care setting, especially when health maintenance rather than illness care is the primary service provided.
A patient comes from the Latin word, patior, which means ‘to suffer and is defined as ‘one who suffers’
What is client Identity?
The client’s identity has defined as a set of unique identifiers that separate an individual from the rest, these include names, age, sex, registration number, and facility name
Patient identifier options include:
- Name
- Assigned identification number (e.g., medical record number)
- Date of birth
- Social security number
- Address
- Photo
Throughout the healthcare industry, the failure to correctly identify patients continues to result in medication errors, transfusion errors, testing errors, wrong person procedures, and the discharge of infants to the wrong families.

Significance of verifying client identity
1. Distinguishes one individual from the rest, Using unique identifiers, clients are distinguished from one another
2. Maintain identifications to create medical reports
- Clinical history
- Helps to know test(s) ordered and completed
- Treatment planned and given
3. Prevent harm to the client, Correct management was given to the correct client
4. Obtain reimbursement for service
-Rational use of the drug
-Cost-effectiveness of services

Verify client on the request form (names, age, sex, and clinical information)

ATTEND CLIENT IN PERSON
A customer or client is a person seeking services from health facilities, institutions, and organizations or from a service provider

· Reduces customer complaints
Apply FIFO
First-In-First-Out (FIFO) for Healthcare
-FIFO is defined as first-in, first-out. In terms of customer service, this means, the first customer/client to come in for service gets served first.
-FILO is defined as first-in, last-out
-In FIFO, the first customer gets served first and depart early, while in FILO, the first customer is delayed in receiving services thus getting out late
-FILO is not applicable in good customer care
Importance of FIFO
- Reduces turnaround time
- Maximizes staff efficiency
- Builds trust
- Reduces costs
Failures to follow FIFO
- Customer dissatisfaction
- Increased turnaround time
- Minimizes staff efficiency
- Destroys trust
- Increases costs
FIFO, or “First in, first-out” is a system that relies on when inventory was purchased. This method of accounting for inventory assumes the first items added to inventory are the first ones sold (Bradford).
This system has advantages and disadvantages. The FIFO system makes sure that patients do not buy/use medicine that is outdated or expired. It ensures that patients receive quality medication, in good condition. It also allows hospitals to avoid having to get rid of outdated inventory and therefore avoids money lost on unused medication.
FIFO is essential for healthcare applications. Suppose a patient enters a hospital and requires care. System A sends out an admit event, followed by a treatment order, but System B receives the order first. System B cannot process the order without an admit, so upon receiving the order, it produces an error. This may delay patient care or require the information system to execute complex logic to associate admit with the order after the admit finally arrives at System Las
